Galactose is a monosaccharide consisting of six carbons and an aldehyde, classified as aldose and hexose. Both D-galactose and L-galactose occur naturally. D-galactose is generally found in milk as a part of the structure of lactose. The lactose in milk is decomposed by the human body into glucose and galactose is absorbed and utilized.
